We welcomed Josh Hassel to the team, in March of this year. Here’s what Josh had to say on how he’s settled into the company so far as a graduate:
“My initial impressions were great; everyone was incredibly welcoming and friendly. The tasks assigned to me were pertinent to the role yet not overly challenging, allowing me to gradually find my feet and familiarise myself with the responsibilities. I then learned more about the larger site supervisions, the reports, and how everything fits together. Shadowing someone on-site during my first month was immensely beneficial; it allowed me to observe processes first-hand and gain practical, real-world experience. Initially, I called more frequently about various issues when I faced unfamiliar problems. However, as I spent more time on-site doing the practical work, my confidence in my abilities and problem-solving skills has grown, leading me to rely less on others for assistance as I gain more experience. Given the supportive atmosphere within the company, I anticipate my confidence will continue to grow over the next six months, along with my experience. I also foresee an expansion of my job knowledge as I deepen my understanding of site contexts and reports, progressing in my role by tackling more complex sites, conducting additional desk studies, and even beginning to write reports.”
Jomas believe investing in graduate schemes is crucial for companies for a number of reasons. Firstly, it allows businesses to nurture young talent from the ground up, ensuring that these individuals are well-versed in the company’s values, culture, and operational procedures. This tailored approach helps in cultivating a skilled and dedicated workforce that is aligned with the organisation’s goals.
Graduate schemes provide fresh graduates with structured training and development opportunities, bridging the gap between academic learning and professional application. This not only enhances the graduates’ skill sets but also boosts their confidence and competence, making them valuable assets to the company.
Additionally, such programs can significantly improve employee retention rates. Graduates who feel supported and see a clear pathway for career advancement within the company are more likely to remain loyal and committed, reducing turnover and the associated costs of hiring and training new staff.
